Veil of the Forgotten Whispers

Wondrous Item (Veil), rare (requires attunement

This ethereal veil shimmers with a translucent, silvery light, woven with strands of forgotten memories and secrets. When draped over the wearer’s head, it transforms their appearance, obscuring their features and creating an aura of mystery. The veil hums softly, resonating with the echoes of those who have worn it before—a chorus of whispers that can both guide and mislead.

While wearing this veil, you gain the following benefits:

  • You have advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) and Wisdom (Insight) checks when interacting with creatures that have an intelligence of 10 or higher, as the veil enhances your ability to resonate with their emotions.

  • Once per long rest, you can cast Detect Thoughts as an action without expending a spell slot. However, upon using this feature, the whispers grow louder, causing you to have disadvantage on saving throws against being charmed until you finish a long rest.

  • As a reaction, when you are targeted by an attack, you can briefly mask your presence, causing the attack to miss. The veil then creates an illusory duplicate of yourself in an unoccupied space within 30 feet, lasting until the end of your next turn. The duplicate has an AC equal to 10 + your Dexterity modifier and disappears if it takes any damage. On each of your subsequent turns, roll a d6. On a roll of 1-3, it can’t mimic your actions; on a roll of 4-6, it can mimic one of your actions as if it were you.

However, the veil carries a burden. Each time you use one of its features, you must roll a d20. On a roll of 1, a fragment of your memory is pulled into the veil, causing you to forget one proficiency or skill for 24 hours.

This item is a double-edged sword, a powerful tool for deception and influence, but be wary of the memories you might lose along the path to power.
