This ornate compass, fashioned from silver with intricate celestial engravings, emanates a faint, ethereal glow. Its needle spins wildly unless held in the presence of a ley line or a point of magical energy. When attuned, the compass grants its bearer a profound connection to the myriad realms beyond the material plane.
While holding the compass, you can attune your senses to the fabric of reality and, by concentrating for 1 minute, you can locate a hidden portal or a doorway to another realm or dimension within a 1-mile radius. The compass will guide you unerringly toward the nearest point, glimmering more brightly as you draw closer.
Additionally, once per day, you can invoke the compass to open a temporary, shimmering portal to a randomly determined realm (such as the Feywild, Shadowfell, or Elemental planes) for a duration of 10 minutes. Any creature can enter or exit through the portal, and it can be used as a means of escape or exploration.
However, this power comes with a cost. Each time you use the dimension-opening ability, roll a d6. On a roll of 1, a creature from the realm you have accessed is drawn through the portal, appearing within 30 feet of you and potentially hostile. This effect may attract unwitting allies or enmity from the denizens of the realm summoned.
Once attuned, you also gain the ability to cast Misty Step once per long rest without expending a spell slot, as the compass allows you to step briefly between the threads of reality. The compass subtly vibrates when there are potent sources of magic nearby, providing you with advantage on checks made to detect traps or hidden magical effects involving teleportation.
Legends say that the compass was crafted by celestial navigators tasked with guiding lost souls, and its true power may only be unlocked fully by those whose hearts resonate with the secrets of the universe.
